Kate Spade

One of my favorite American fashion designers and entrepreneur is Katherine Noel Valentine Brosnahan Spade or also known as Kate Spade. Since I can remember I have particularly loved their handbags. You can upscale your look or have that everyday fashion statement with a Kate Spade bag, fashion piece, or accessory.

Kate Spade was the cod-founder and co-owner of the designer brand Kate Spade New York. She died on June 5, 2018, in Manhattan leaving an outstanding designer legacy.

Let’s get to know this imperial designer that many, including me still love today-Kate was born to June and Frank Brosnahan in Kansas City, Missouri who owned a road construction company and were of Irish descent. Kate attended an all-female Catholic High School, St. Teresa’s Academy. She then went on to the University of Kansas and later transferred to Arizona State University to complete her college education. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, graduating in 1985 with a journalism degree. She had hope to go into television work; but while in college working at a Carter’s Men clothing store, she met her future husband Andy Spade. The couple made the move to Manhattan together as a couple after graduation.

Kate worked for Mademoiselle department store in the accessories department. While working at this prestigious store, she became the head of the accessories department and a senior fashion editor. It was at this point that she felt she could create her own stylish, trend setting handbags and she left Mademoiselle.

Kate Spade New York was created in January of 1993 by Kate and Andy. Interestingly, Kate and Andy were not married, and she paused on the name for a just a minute. Kate Brosnahan did not seem appropriate for a fashion company, but finally agreed on Kate Spade. They did eventually marry, and she did take the name Spade as a designer.

More to come tomorrow-The company Kate Spade New York-The company, the designs, and the intriguing looks.
